Bangkok’s first Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) line is open for riders, starting with a three-month free trial run from now until August 31. The line runs just over 15 kilometers, from Sathon Road to Ratchaphruek Road, with 12 stops along the way. The new city buses have their own dedicated lane on the road.
Sathorn Road, home to luxury hotels the Banyan Tree, Sukhothai and The Met, is one of Bangkok’s most sought after addresses. But along with that prestige comes the road’s notorious rush hour traffic snarls, which Bangkok’s city planners hope will ease with the addition of the BRT.
The Sathorn station is connected by a passenger bridge to the Chong Nonsi BTS Skytrain station, while the 12-meter BRT buses are able to carry 80 passengers. On the weekend, Thailand-based blogger Richard Barrow rode the new BRT line and created a Google map highlighting the route’s stops and nearby attractions.
According to the Bangkok Metropolitan Authority, four new routes will be added to the BRT network, starting with the Mo Chit-Nonthaburi line, due for completion in 2012.
